. 🇫🇷 Mercredi, c’est #HistoireDuLouvre ! Connaissez-vous la rotonde d’Apollon ? - 👑 Aménagée par l’architecte Louis Le Vau, la rotonde d’Apollon constitue l’ancienne salle d'audience de Louis XIV. Elle fut par la suite allouée à l'Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture, de 1692 à 1793. Le décor de stucs et de fresques date quant à lui du XIXe siècle. - 🖼 Ce vestibule circulaire possède un plafond orné de la « Chute d'Icare » réalisée par Merry-Joseph Blondel. Cette représentation évoque l’épisode mythologique d’Icare s’échappant du labyrinthe dans lequel il était retenu prisonnier. Pour ce faire, il fabrique des ailes en cire et en plumes. Cependant, en volant trop près du soleil, ses ailes fondent. Icare tombe et se noie dans la mer, désormais appelée « mer Icarienne » selon la légende. - 📌 La rotonde permet l’accès à la galerie d'Apollon au sein de l’aile Denon, dont la muséographie vient d’être repensée. --- 🌎 Wednesday it’s #LouvreHistory! Do you know the Rotunda of Apollo? - 👑 Designed by the architect Louis Le Vau, the Apollo rotunda is the former courtroom of Louis XIV. It was later allocated to the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture, between 1692 and 1793. The decoration of stuccoes and frescoes dates from the 19th century. - 🖼 This circular vestibule has a ceiling decorated with the "Chute d'Icare" by Merry-Joseph Blondel. This representation evokes the mythological episode of Icarus escaping from the labyrinth in which he was held prisoner. To do so, he makes wings out of wax and feathers. However, by flying too close to the sun, his wings melt. Decorated ceilings are one of my favorite things. When a room has fully decorated walls it creates a full experience, transporting you into the world of the artist.
