Since starting his Instagram channel, Nate Wood (better known as @woodreaux) has quickly gained a massive following. He's known for his eccentric outfits, mixing graphic tees and shirts with classic ripped denim. We sat down with Nate to talk about his inspirations, motivations, and where he sees the future of streetwear.
What does a typical day in your week look like?
"Well, my full-time job is managing a coffee shop called Cirque Coffee here in Tulsa Oklahoma. So my typical day starts out opening the shop. Then once I get done at the shop the rest of my day usually consists of a couple hours at the gym, then several days a week you can find me shooting photos in the late afternoon/evening. Then, of course, some good ol' Netflix binging and a couple bags of popcorn to wrap up the day typically. Haha."
What inspires you to keep going?
"Seeing other people killing it. There are so many dudes out here in this fashion game that is hustling and killing the game, and it just makes me feel like I haven't even come close to tapping into my full potential. I don't say that to sound like I'm chasing anyone else's dream, but just seeing people crushing their lane makes me want to crush mine. Also, the love and support of this community on IG is a constant inspiration to me as well. I have made some real deal friends in this cyber-community that have continually encouraged and supported me to keep going and growing- you guys (Nomad fam) being included in that group. I am so so grateful for that! "
What has been the biggest challenge for you so far?
"Myself. I feel like I am constantly my worst critic, and if I let myself get into my own head then I just feel like everything I am producing is trash and nothing is ever good enough because I am a perfectionist. I just get hella hard on myself. Aside from the mental side, shooting on my own has posed challenges at times. I shoot and edit all the content on my page with just an iPhone. So that isn't always the easiest thing, but I have worked super hard to figure out how to make it work and to get the job done."
What advice do you have for others who hope to become influencers?
"Never stop working to increase the quality of your content. Whether it's a new location, new camera, new shooter, better editing practices, whatever it is- always analyze everything you're doing and ask yourself how could I be doing this better? It's a tough market, there are SO many people out here producing incredible content, and because the social media market is so flooded I would also encourage you to really work to create a signature style- in your outfits, your photos, editing style, etc. make it all your own. You want people to know when they see your content, that is YOUR content. Regardless of whether or not you are trying to sell a product or not, you are building a brand with your page/content, and every brand HAS to have a signature to its style. So really think about what you want to be as a "brand" and how you want to market yourself, and then once you have your lane identified just crush that thing."
Where do you see the future of streetwear?
"Damn. That's a tough question. There is so much happening in the street fashion world right now, people trying to go all kind of directions. Obviously, the vintage/sporty vibe is really taking off right now. But I honestly think the 90s throwback trend is gonna be around for a bit and start to diversify a bit more- vintage skater vibes, etc. I feel inspired by a lot of whats happening in the Euro streetwear community, blending more vintage/high fashion vibes with street gear and what have you, I think there is a lot of room for that to grow especially here in the states."
